The Helm — the center of a kitchen can be a bookshelf
As part of installing open shelving in a kitchen in Oakland I was commissioned to design something for a central supporting wall with doorways to either side. I was inspired by Danish modular shelving I had seen in my grandparents house and imagined something similar to a magazine display that was part of that system. Using reclaimed barn-wood harvested from a stable up in Santa Rosa I adapted the The Helm’s design to meet the modern rustico aesthetic of the rest of the kitchen.
